Is your home page dead?

Why your home page is not as important as you think it is and why you need to implement certain things across your site to make it work for you.

You may not be aware of this but when people come to your website they don’t always land on your home page.

If you have a blog, 9 times out of 10 they will land there. Why? Because this is where the content is and this is what Google and the other search engines are picking up.

So why does this matter?
If on your home page you are telling people what you do and have a great introduction then your visitors will be missing out on seeing this and you’ll be missing out on potential work or contacts.
Plus if you’re asking people to download your free e-book / audio on your home page and this is only available on the home page then you’re missing out on building your list if they land on another page.

What can you do to change this?
Make sure that on every page – yes every page – ok except the contact us page, but every page should have your free download promotion on it.
On my blog I have it twice as you will see – on the top right offering the e-book for the number 1 secret to growing your business and also a great little pop up plug-in by Pippity that is also a great way to ask for people’s names and emails in return for your great hints and tips.

When I look at my website stats the amount of people that land on my home page are very few and that’s because I have so much new content being added to all the other pages and because I integrate my blogging, TV shows and radio shows with Social Media and sites like Triberr, this is why my home page isn’t getting much of a look-in these days.

Self assessment
Take a good look at your site and make sure that it’s easy for your visitors to know what you do no matter what page they land on. Make sure that it is also easy for them to find out more about you, buy your product or services and if you are giving away a free download then again make sure this is easy to see on all pages. The top right hand side is the best place.

Another hint I would give about having a free download is give a brief overview of what they will get in return for their name and email. Simply having ‘Sign up for my newsletter’ doesn’t really cut it these days because we are awash with newsletters, and the mere mention of them makes us want to click delete.

Get someone else to look at your site
Another good tip is to have someone look at your website who doesn’t really know what you do and ask them to give you their comments and thoughts on what it is you do.

Because we see our own website every day then we sometimes don’t see what is missing so having someone else take a look is worth doing.
